CANUCKS

Classement de l’an dernier: 15e
Classement NHL:25e
Gradués: Nicolas Roy, Nicholas Aubé-Kubel

1. Trevor Zegras, C, Boston University-Hockey East

March 20, 2001 | six-foot | 174 pounds

Tier: Elite/high-end LNHV2 player bubble

Skating: 50

Puck Skills: 60

Physical Game: 45

Hockey Sense: 75

Zegras had a very good freshman season, although for a prospect rated this high he didn’t blow people away with his production. He was fantastic at the world juniors, and gets a high rating mostly due to his incredible skill set. Zegras can dazzle with his puck skills and offensive creativity, he has the potential to be one of the best passers in the LNHV2. He makes some of the most creative offensive plays I’ve seen with regularity. He can shoot the puck well, but he is a pass-first type who could run a power play off the flank in the LNHV2. Zegras needs an extra step in his skating, and while he doesn’t shy away from physical play, he will need to be better off the puck, improve his discipline and consistency. He has a lot of work to do when he turns pro next season, but there is no doubting the elite talent.

2. Tobias Bjornfot, D, Ontario-AHL

April 6, 2001 | six-foot | 203 pounds

Tier: Very good LNHV2 player

Skating: 60

Puck Skills: 55

Physical Game: 45

Hockey Sense: 60

Bjornfot had a great first season in North America. He made the Kings briefly out of camp, before being sent to the AHL where he was very good for an 18 year old. He played on both special teams for Ontario and looked like a pro defenseman. Bjornfot isn’t going to land on a lot of highlight reels, but he’s a very smooth and efficient defenseman. He’s a great skater, with a powerful stride and great edgework to get up into attacks, evade pressure and close gaps very well. His hands are fine, but his brain and vision allow him to create offense. He can find seams in the zone and make great outlet passes, but he likely won’t be a big-time power-play type in the LNHV2.

3. Nolan Foote, LW, Kelowna-WHL

Nov. 29, 2000 | 6-foot-4 | 201 pounds

Tier: Very good LNHV2 player

Skating: 50

Puck Skills: 55

Physical Game: 60

Hockey Sense: 60

Shot: 60

Foote is a player that’s generally impressed me this season, especially with Canada’s U20 team and reports from NHL scouts have been positive. He’s a 6-foot-4 forward with very good hockey sense and a cannon of a shot. He’s not just a perimeter player though, but someone who competes well and can use his big frame to drive the net. His skating isn’t the best, but I think he’ll be able to handle NHL speed, and I like his skating more than a year ago. He hasn’t been overly productive in the WHL, which is a concern, but he was very good with Canada’s U20 team in the summer and winter when he had better players to play with rather than when he was with Kelowna, which was near the bottom of the WHL in goals for.

4. Vitaly Kravtsov, RW, Hartford-AHL

Dec. 23, 1999 | 6-foot-4 | 183 pounds

Tier: Very good LNHV2 player

Skating: 50

Puck Skills: 65

Physical Game: 50

Hockey Sense: 60

Kravtsov had a tough season. He bounced between the AHL and Russia and never seemed to find a groove in any league where he could be a consistent offensive force. He’s a very tough evaluation case because he’s very talented. He’s a big forward with elite hands who can make high-end plays through defenders or to his teammates. He projects to run an LNHV2 power-play unit due to his vision and on his best shift Kravtsov can take over. Those best shifts are spread out though, as Kravtsov’s lack of speed and physicality led to a significant adjustment period to the AHL level but he showed progress as the season went on. He needs some stability, to be able to dominate a level for a significant period of time and make the most of his tremendous skill.

5. Jesper Boqvist, LW, Binghamton-AHL

Oct. 30, 1998 | six-foot | 181 pounds

Tier: Legit LNHV2 player

Skating: 60

Puck Skills: 55

Physical Game: 45

Hockey Sense: 60

Boqvist had an up and down season. He had a good camp, following by an iffy first NHL stint but looked better in the AHL. Boqvist is a great skater who can shoot the puck well and make plays very well. His consistency and ability to win battles has never been the best. He’s skilled but it’s debatable whether the skill is high-end enough for him to play a scoring role in the league. I think because of his great skating he will find a way to keep playing games and help transition pucks, but adding to his game with the puck will be important.

LNHV2 POTENTIAL

Jeremy Swayman, G, Maine-Hockey East: Swayman had a terrific season, being the best goaltender in the NCAA with a .939 save percentage, helping Maine be one of the top teams in their conference despite a very mediocre offense. Swayman is an interesting evaluation case that draws divides among scouts. He’s super smart. He makes a lot of clever reads in the net, showing great anticipation of where the puck is going to go, tracking it well through traffic, behind the net and from quick passing plays. Swayman lacks the clear athletic tools NHL scouts want though. He’s roughly 6-foot-2 and doesn’t show tremendous quickness in net, leading him to fail to get to a lot of tough stops you want an LNHV2 goalie to be able to make.

Mackenzie Entwistle, RW, Rockford-AHL: Entwistle had a fine rookie pro season. There’s nothing flashy about his game, but he’s a big, competitive winger who can win battles and be good around the net. He’s not a top-end skill type but he can have good offensive flashes between his hands and playmaking. He needs to gain a step in his skating, but there’s bottom of the lineup potential in his game.

Mikey Anderson, D, Ontario-AHL: Anderson is a very smart two-way defenseman who can move the puck at a top level, but his skating is average, especially for his size.

Dustin Wolf, G, Everett-WHL: Wolf was named the top goalie in the CHL, continuing a remarkable junior career to date. He’s a very intelligent goalie, who squares up tough saves consistently. He shows no difficulty picking up tough passing pucks and pucks through traffic and reacts quickly. He measures in at barely 6 feet which is notably undersized for an LNHV2 goalie. For a goalie that size, he lacks top-end quickness like a Juuse Saros, but his quickness is still very good and he can make tough saves. His size will be a major question as he advances to play versus men despite his junior success.

Jack St. Ivany, D, Yale-ECAC: St. Ivany is interesting as a 6-foot-3 right-handed defenseman who can move the puck and is smart defensively. His skating has hampered him for a while but it’s good enough to be a relevant prospect.

Adam Werner, G, Colorado-AHL: Werner’s numbers in his first season in North America were just OK in the AHL, but I generally liked what I saw when watching him and he held his own in a brief NHL recall. In net he looks like a giant standing in at 6-foot-5 and takes up a lot of net. He’s a very smart goalie who anticipates the play at a high level and rarely seems out of position. While he makes a lot of right reads and he reacts quickly, his leg quickness is simply fine. He can make some tough athletic saves, but not at a very high level.
